Arugula at the Sid Smith plot.
On May 21st, Dig In! volunteers enjoyed the first harvest of the season from the Sid Smith plot and the Willcocks planters. We harvested arugula, salad greens lettuce, and spinach, which were added to a salad with green onions. Unfortunately no pictures were taken of the picnic we had with the salad because too much fun was being had.
Green onions and arugula ready to be harvested.
After our lunch we headed over to the Hart House Plot to transplant the rest of our seedlings into the pot now that the weather is staying warm.
The rye ground cover had to be removed to prepare the bed for the seedlings. Rye was planted last year to keep the soil loose and fertile over the winter.
We planted rows of sweet peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplant, ground cherries, and cucumbers.
Maxine and Bonnie transplant tomatoes. Bonnie is showing Maxine how to firmly press the plant into the soil to ensure the roots take to the new soil.
Seedlings ready to be planted! These seedlings have been growing over the last couple of months in the Anthropology greenhouse.
After all the seedlings were planted in the Hart House Plot, we started to prep the soil at the Hart House Farm Committee plot. We will be seeding this plot over the next week.
