Dig In! Joined volunteers from the University of Toronto Student Union to prep the soil, transplant seedlings and sow seeds in the Equity Garden that runs along the U.T.S.U building in Hart House Circle. Produce harvested from the garden will be donated to the U.T.S.U food bank at the Multi-Faith Centre.
Anna and Bonnie prep the garden by turning the soil and taking out weeds or other unwanted plants.
We transplanted planted raspberry bushes along the south side of the building, with sage, thyme and rosemary between the plants.
Raspberry bushes are a perennial plant, which means they can survive through the winter and regrow in the spring.
Our main focus was seeding along the front path of the building. We used the crop rotation method by choosing to plant different varieties of plants then were grown last year. Last year, the U.T.S.U garden grew mainly eggplants, ocra, peppers, and tomatoes. This year, we planted swiss chard, kale, bush beans, squash, carrots, corn, rosemary, sage, and thyme. There is also a large mint plant that is growing on the south side of the building.
