June 4th Garden Work Day: Plot Maintenance and Re-Seeding

On June 4th, we gathered to weed and tend to the gardens, as all the plots have been planted!

Weeding can be a tedious task, but it can be very relaxing in the summer heat!

Weeding a garden is beneficial to allow your veggies and other intentionally planted plants thrive. Weeds can take important nutrition from the soil, leaving less for your veggies. They also take up root space in the soil. The weed pictured above is known as purslane, it is a succulent plant and edible weed that is really high in omega 3! Higher them some fish (great news for vegetarians)! Like purslane, many weeks are edible, and make good editions to salad and stir fry’s. Since purslane tastes great, is healthy, beautiful and doesn’t take up too much room in the garden, we decided to keep it! What you weed in your garden is up to you, and don’t forget to consult a guide before you eat any weeds.

The corn growing in the planter had a “three sisters” companion planting around it that didn’t germinate. We planted more squash and bean seeds to fill the gaps.

Sage was also planted to fill in some gaps in the planters. Sage and other herbs will regrow after winter.
