1. Community Food Animator Workstudy*
The Community Food Animator will work collaboratively with Hart House and the Dig In! Campus Agriculture Network (DICAN) to increase access to healthy, sustainable food at the University of Toronto.
The CFA will work to educate and engage the greater UofTcommunity by transforming underutilized campus spaces into highly-visible food gardens. He/she will be responsible for:
a) designing and maintaining DICAN community plots across St. George campus
b) overseeing the harvest, distribution, donation, and sale of garden produce
c) assisting DICAN staff, students, and/or volunteers with programming and outreach efforts
This position is well-suited for students interested in foodissues, urban agriculture, and community-scale environmental policy. He/she will learn about the material and human dimensions of pursuing sustainable change within an institutional environment.
Qualified applicants will have demonstrated a working knowledge of urban agriculture,food politics, and/or foodsecurity; prior gardening and/or agricultural experience is a definite asset. Applicants should be motivated, organized, and resourceful.

2. UTSU Garden Coordinator (Applications due SOON!)
Position Type: Part-time temporary (4-5 months) Location: Toronto, Ontario (University of Toronto, St. George campus) Application Deadline: Friday, May 20, 2011 Start Date: As soon as possible
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES • Reviewing previous years’ garden layouts and yields/food production. • Drafting a new garden plan annually including garden layout, recommended vegetables, comparison planting, herbs and other plants, estimated expenses/budget, estimated harvests and time lines. • Developing recommendations as to sustainability practices (i.e. biodegradable bags for garden waste, composting, alternatives to chemical fertilizers, etc.). • Costing and purchasing seeds, seedlings, soil, fertilizer, gardening tools, and other supplies as needed or directed. • Keeping an inventory list of tools and supplies. • Weekly maintenance of U.T.S.U. garden plots including weeding and watering. • Orienting volunteers with the U.T.S.U. garden and assisting them with their assigned roles as needed. • In conjunction with the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, corresponding with garden volunteers as needed. • Harvesting and packaging food for the U.T.S.U. Food & Clothing Bank. • Preparing displays of food produced in the garden for the U.T.S.U. office. • In conjunction with the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, developing outreach initiatives and visibility outlets to promote the garden. • Reporting regularly to the Vice President Equity and taking further directions as necessary. • Amending the garden plan at the end of the season as necessary. • Providing a report at the end of the season for the U.T.S.U. Board of Directors, including basic information about the garden’s successes, challenges, and final total food production for the season. • Drafting recommendations for future years, including initiatives that can be taken on during winter months.
REQUIREMENTS • Experience with gardens, gardening, and/or farming is essential. • Knowledge of sustainability, the sustainability movement, and sustainable/environmentally-friendly and organic gardening practises. • Demonstrated leadership and/or volunteer coordination skills. • Time management and organizational skills. • Understanding of the objectives and operations of students’ unions, and the history and goals of the student movement. • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Two years of post-secondary education completed, with minimum average of ‘good’ standing, combined with some related employment or volunteer experience.
COMPENSATION Hourly: $15 per hour, 12 hours per week.
