On January 30th, 2013, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) – University of Toronto Chapter hosted its first event of 2013 at Hart House with the focus on raising awareness on the importance of International Food Security and Sustainability.
UNDP is an organization that has been partnering with people at all levels of society advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge experience and resources to help people build a better life. At the University of Toronto, UNDP UofT serves as a forum for discussions, networking and knowledge sharing to promote mutual growth, through the organization of events and programs that focus on global issues based on the Millennium Development Goals.
This event featured an impressive list of speakers engaging in an informative dialogue with students on issues related to food security on a global scale. The panelists included Professor Donald Cole, a faculty member of the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health; Lauren Kepkiewicz, a PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto; and Dr. Nalan Yuksel, a senior food security analyst at the Canadian International Development Agency. Their vast accomplishments and knowledge provided students a great opportunity to engage with them on current efforts for possible ways to prevent food crises and insecurity in the future and to eradicate hunger and poverty in the developing world. In addition to the presenters and an informative Q&A, Dig In! Campus Agriculture hosted a brief presentation on local food sustainability so students can see the efforts made by their own peers within the campus.
This event had an impressive turnout; food security is indeed a hot topic! Do you have any solutions to eradicate hunger and prevent food insecurity? Share your ideas!
