Have you ever had extra stuff growing in the garden, and wanted to put it to good use, but had no idea how to find someone who wanted it?
ExtraShare is a new web application that helps community members connect through gardening. The app displays shares as icons on a map, allowing you to easily find people to meet with nearby. The system, similar to craigslist, is free and completely open, so you don’t need to sign up to use it.
You can also track your entire agricultural operation on the public map or privately with friends. A new feature, “My Grow Ops”, helps users to add pictures of their backyard gardens and indoor oases. It’s an outlet for sharing the story of your garden.
Additional features are being developed on an ongoing basis. For example, food organizations will benefit from the latest: private maps. After logging in, users can create maps that only they, and those they invite, can access. André, a private ExtraShare map owner with Hortelões Urbanos in Brazil, reports: “We were discussing the creation of a map to help us localize the resources for urban agriculture in the monster city of São Paulo. And suddenly, someone from the group sent me the link to ExtraShare! I was completely amazed and incredibly happy about it, as it was sort of a dream I wished would come true.”
The site is accessible from both computers and mobile devices, and signing up is free.
